Hondón de las Nieves literally means “Gorge of the Snow”. It is named for the village’s patron, the “Virgin of the Snow”, and her church is at the heart of village life, with a fiesta dedicated to her.

Although little is written about the history of Hondón de las Nieves, it is said the town was inhabited in Greek times. It belonged to the jurisdiction of Aspe until 1839, when it became independent, forming a single municipality together with Hondón de los Frailes. In 1926, Hondón de las Nieves and Hondón de los Frailes became independent municipalities.

The Hondón Valley is well known for its grape vines and is sometimes called “the Valley of the Vines”. The economy relies heavily on agriculture in this fertile valley, with grapes, almonds, and olives being the main crops.
