TWENTY-FOUR Spanish provinces are on ‘orange’ or ‘yellow’ alert due to the current heatwave.
Over the next few days, temperatures are expected to reach between 36ºC and 40ºC in the shade throughout most of the country.
Already, the provinces of Murcia, Granada, Albacete, Sevilla, Jaén and Córdoba are on ‘orange’ alert, one step below a full-blown state of emergency.
Those on ‘yellow’ alert, or high risk, include Valencia, Alicante, Almería, Cádiz, Teruel, Madrid, Huelva, the whole of the Balearic Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas.
Parts of central Spain, the whole of Aragón and the southern half of Catalunya are also likely to see temperatures pushing 40ºC.
The island of Menorca is also on pre-emergency alert over the risk of tidal waves reaching over a metre in height.
