Spain made it ten wins out of ten with a 5-2 away victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina last night to qualify for South Africa with a 100 per cent record, depite missing some of their key players - Puyol, Xavi, Cesc, Villa and Fernando Torres were all out because of injuries.
Already assured of a place at next year's tournament, the Spaniards went ahead in the first half with a 13th minute goal from Barça defender, Gerard Pique. With both Iniesta and Casillas on spectacular form, there was never much doubt about the result.
David Silva doubled Spain's lead just a minute later, before two second-half goals from Alvaro Negredo and one from Juan Mata made it five for the visitors to the Olympic Stadium.
Two late consolation goals for Bosnia-Herzegovina gave the home fans something to cheer about, with Edin Dzeko and Zvjezdan Misimovic scoring in the dying minutes.
On what he later described as "a great night" for Spanish football, Iniesta was given a standing ovation by the rival fans when he was substituted in the 66th minute.
With Bosnia-Herzegovina already guaranteed second place in the group, the result was immaterial, with Spain already through and the home side into the play-offs.
England also ended their qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup with a victory last night, winning 3-0 against Belarus at Wembley to make it nine wins out of ten. Peter Crouch scored twice, and Shaun Wright-Phillips added one in between, to give England a comfortable win.
