TEMPERATURES reached a whopping 44ºC in the shade today in parts of Spain, and the heatwave looks set to continue.
According to the state meteorological agency, AEMET, the centre and south-west of the country was the hottest, particularly inland, with temperatures rising well above 40ºC.
On the east coast, street thermometers registered 33ºC in the shade at 20.00hrs in the evening.
AEMET says the climate is warmer than usual for the time of year, since traditionally, the hottest days tend to be between July 15 and August 15.
Health authorities warn the public to stay out of the midday sun where possible, to wear hats and suncream, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and heavy meals.
