Organ donors up by over 10% and Spain still world number one for transplants
09/06/2017
SPAIN may have broken the 5,000 barrier for organ transplants by the end of this year after a 10.2% rise in donors, securing its as-yet undisputed position as number one country in the world for transplants.
Donations in 'asistolia' – meaning donors with no heartbeat – have risen by 27%, although live donations have also grown, typically kidneys or parts of livers.
Lung transplants have increased by 25% year-on-year, whilst liver transplants have gone up by 17% and kidneys have risen by 9.3%.
Bone-marrow donations have gone up by 15%, to a total of 323,857 compared with the 281,000 as at the end of 2016 – partly, it is thought, due to a global appeal by young leukaemia patient Pablo Ráez, who started a Twitter campaign to find a million donors.
Left-wing political party Compromís wants to change the law so that all adults in Spain are automatically become donors if they are suitable, unless they express a wish to the contrary.
This would mean the current 'donor register' being replaced with a 'non-donor register'.
Compromís points out that 85% of families in Spain are in agreement with donating their loved ones' organs, and that laws on the subject should be geared towards this majority rather than the 15% minority who do not agree.
Fittingly for a country which continuously holds the world number one slot for donation and transplant numbers, Spain will host the International Transplant Games this year, starting on June 25 in Málaga.
It will see 2,218 sportsmen and sportswomen from 50 countries pitting their skills against each other.
The Spanish team is made up of 77 competitors, including four children.
