A BEACH near Valencia was shut and evacuated yesterday (Friday) evening after a five-foot shark was spotted off the shore, Local Police confirmed today.
The red flag was hoisted at 14.30 on La Patacona beach in Alboraia, and all bathers were ordered to get out of the sea.
Lifeguards claim they had seen the shark described as about 1.5 metres long, but no further sightings of it were reported for the rest of Friday, nor today.
Sharks are occasionally sighted in the Mediterranean, but are generally harmless to humans and survive by eating small fish.
At Valencia's Oceanogràfic centre, visitors can even swim with them.
