Barça and Man U veterans in charity friendly for terrorism victims
30/08/2017
A 'FRIENDLY' between veteran FC Barcelona and Manchester United players will raise money for victims of terrorism in both cities this coming Saturday at Old Trafford.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, Patrick Kluivert, Edwin Van der Sar, Eric Abidal, Park Ji-Sung, and Edgar Davids are expected to be playing for Man U, according to their trainer Bryan Robson.
The former Red Devils captain said: “Manchester is no stranger to the devastating effects of terrorism and we can understand just how difficult it is for the people of Catalunya to get back on their feet after the recent attacks.”
Barça's former defender Albert Ferrer, who will captain his old team in the charity friendly, added: “The two cities [Manchester and Barcelona] have become united by terrorism this year, and I think it's important to show the world that they are very together.”
A minute's silence for those who lost their lives in the attacks at Manchester Arena, the Ramblas in Barcelona and in the centre of Cambrils (Tarragona province, 120 kilometres south of Barcelona) will be held before kick-off, and all players will wear black arm bands, whilst their strips will bear the words 'Manchester' and 'Barcelona' in capitals.
The death toll for the attacks in either region was similar – 22 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the exit to Manchester Arena after Ariana Grande's concert in the early hours of May 23, whilst 13 pedestrians were killed on the Ramblas in a van attack and a 14th died in hospital this week, whilst one other was stabbed to death by the terrorist who hijacked his car and another woman perished in Cambrils just hours after the massacre in Barcelona.
In both cases, all the terrorists involved are now either in jail or were shot dead by the police.
