A SPANISH flag measuring 731 square metres, weighing 248 kilos and 14 storeys in length has been hung from apartment blocks under construction in Madrid's Valdebebas by a building firm 'fed up with' the situation in Catalunya.
The largest Spanish flag ever created, it is said to symbolise there being 'room for all Spaniards living in freedom' in the country.
Business owner César Cort said he is 'hurt' by the corporate exodus from Catalunya – so far, over 30 major national companies have shifted their head offices out of the region to Valencia, Alicante, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Málaga and Palma de Mallorca – and expresses his 'fervent desire' for the people of Spain to 'remain united, respect the law and be protected by the Constitution'.
“As a trader and a Spaniard, it upsets me that there's been such a massive corporate evacuation from Catalunya – that the extraordinary professional and industrial fabric of the region, which is so difficult to create from scratch is moving away so quickly, dragging millions of catalanes adrift,” Cort admits.
“It's not an ideology issue; it's about common sense.”
His flags have been draped vertically down the 14-storey blocks at number 7 of the C/ José Antonio Corrales, each of them measuring 43 metres, or over 130 feet, in length.
