African migrant on surfboard caught off Ceuta coast
03/11/2017
A SUB-SAHARAN African migrant rescued three miles off the coast of Ceuta was paddling on a surfboard and dressed in flippers and a neoprene diving suit, according to the coastguard.
The would-be immigrant – whose attempt to enter Spain is one of the most creative yet seen – was spotted at around 07.50 yesterday (Thursday) following an alert from the Guardia Civil, and was taken ashore in the lifeboat Atria.
He was shipped to the port of Ceuta, one of Spain's two enclaves on the northern Moroccan coast – the other being Melilla – to the east of Tangiers and the nearest point of the African continent to the Spanish mainland, across the Strait of Gibraltar.
The migrant was said to be in good health, and is likely to be placed in an immigration internment centre where he will remain until any application for asylum he presents is either accepted or rejected.
