Demonstrations across Spain against domestic violence
25/11/2017
AT LEAST 50 towns and cities across Spain will hold demonstrations this weekend against domestic and gender violence as part of a global movement which will include conferences, exhibitions and workshops.
In some towns, the Red Cross has organised self-defence courses for women to keep them safe in the event of an attack.
The main event to mark International Eradication of Gender Violence Day will see hundreds of thousands of protesters marking from Madrid's Plaza de la Villa to the central Puerta del Sol square from 19.00 tonight (Saturday).
This year in Spain is likely to see a much greater turn-out and a more vigorous call for women's fundamental legal rights, in light of an ongoing trial for a gang-rape during Pamplona's famous Sanfermines bull-running festival.
An unnamed young woman was attacked by a gang who call themselves 'The Herd' ('La Manada') and who filmed her ordeal on their mobile phones.
The accused parties are attempting to claim they had engaged in consensual relations with the woman and that she panicked when she thought they were filming her.
But her lawyer, and women's groups across Spain, say the victim herself is being put on trial.
The defence says the video footage is 'gruesome' and that it is clear the woman did not willingly accede to having sex with the group.
