24/12/2017
THREE of Spain's northern regions are reportedly the first to be hit by the influenza virus in epidemic proportions.
Asturias, Castilla y León and the Basque Country have registered a very high number of 'flu patients and, whilst the virus has affected other regions, the incidence has been considerably lower.
Anyone entitled to a free 'flu vaccination on the national health system – typically the over-65s, those with chronic physical illness and anyone working closely with children, the elderly, the sick or the public in general – is urged to take advantage of this as soon as possible.
Those who do not fall into these categories but wish to protect themselves can do so at any high-street pharmacy for approximately €20.
Expats returning to the UK for Christmas can acquire a 'flu jab at Boots, Asda and other major chemist chains for between five and 10 pounds.
Influenza is disabling and extremely unpleasant for a week or two, but not generally harmful, except those with weakened immune systems, poor health, or the elderly, when it can become life-threatening.
Doctors recommend regular hand-washing or sanitising and always covering the mouth when sneezing to avoid cross-contamination, even in those with no 'flu symptoms, as they may be a carrier.
