The 13-year-old was about to light a rocket on Christmas Day at 00.20 – given that in Spain, the main festive celebrations happen on the night of Christmas Eve – in the patio of his home on the C/ Murillo in the Peñamefecit neighbourhood of the city.

At first, it was thought that the exploding firework had only destroyed one finger, but further investigations showed his entire hand was damaged.
Medics were unable to save it and it had to be amputated.
The little boy is under sedation and on a ward, according to hospital sources.
