ON-DEMAND public transport in Mijas (Málaga province) has been extended from this week, and will now cover out-of-town urbanisations that are not on the conventional bus route.
Councillor for mobility, Nicolás Cruz, says the M-119 and M-223 lines can be 'summoned' by residents without a stop nearby, and the buses will alter their course to cater for them.
The service is, naturally, cheaper than calling a taxi, allows those without access to a car or unable to drive to get about, and keeps emissions and traffic volume down by serving areas whose inhabitants would otherwise have to use individual vehicles.
Request stops can be 'booked' by using the local transport authority mobile phone App or website, Nicolás Cruz says.
As well as investing in the round-town bus network, Mijas carried out a mass overhaul of roads on 26 of its urbanisations in spring 2021 to improve driver and pedestrian safety and comfort.
Another Costa del Sol town which has ploughed funds into its local public transport system this year is Marbella, where anyone registered as resident can get a pass valid until at least 2023 to use the bus network free of charge.
