The regional government of the Canary Islands explained yesterday that a plague of at least two million locusts from Africa is attacking crops on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The worst affected areas so far are the villages of Haría and Yaiza, but, although their destructive capability is huge, the insects have not caused as much damage as usual because they are exhausted after the long journey, and are too tired to feed as voraciously as normal. A team of around 100 council workers are working around the clock to fumigate, capture and burn them.
