Power cut across whole of Tenerife
18/02/2010
Endesa has just announced that power has been restored to 20% of customers in Tenerife after the whole island had been without electricity since 12.08 today, due to a problem in the Las Caletillas power station in the town of Candelaria (pictured).
The Granadilla power station, that is supposed to be able to replace the Las Caletillas in the event of a power failure, also failed, leaving the islanders without any power at all for several hours.
Endesa has so far been unable to find out the exact cause of the failure, which affected the whole island - some 850,000 people - and has so far only offered apologies and thanked customers for their understanding.
900 police officers have been deployed on the island's streets to help prevent traffic accidents, since none of the traffic lights are working.
This is the second time that the island of Tenerife has experienced a complete power cut. On May 26th last year a powerful electrical storm knocked out the same power station and left the whole island without electricity.
There is currently a severe weather warning in Tenerife, with winds of up to 120kmph expected.
