Spain welcomes 81 Eritrean refugees from camp in Italy
12/01/2017
ANOTHER group of refugees has arrived in Spain, bringing the total so far taken in up to 979.
This is generous compared with many European countries which are trying to refuse to resettle any at all, but still a long way short of Spain's target, which would mean taking in another 17,337 asylum-seekers by the end of this summer.
The latest arrivals are 67 men, 12 women and two children, all Eritrean nationals who have come from refugee camps in Italy as part of the European Union's distribution and asylum programme.
They will be given homes mostly in Madrid and Córdoba, with 20 and 13 in each of the two provinces, and another 11 in the Balearic Islands, nine each in Navarra and Asturias, five in Murcia, four in La Rioja, six in the Basque country in two separate provinces, and two in Valencia.
Spain has so far offered asylum to 979 refugees from camps in Greece, Italy, Turkey and Lebanon, mostly from Syria but also from Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and now Eritrea.
