SPAIN'S president Mariano Rajoy has assured the European Union the country's commitment to the Paris Climate Change Agreement is stronger than ever now US leader Donald Trump has pulled the North American nation out of the deal.
“Spain's commitment to the Paris agreement is maintained, and the European Union will continue to lead the fight against global warming in the right direction,” Rajoy tweeted.
Trump claims the pact 'puts the economy and US workers at a permanent disadvantage', and cites this as his reason for withdrawing.
But the Republican boss' motives appear more likely to be because he does not believe in global warming, having stated during his electoral campaign that climate change was 'just weather'.
Demonstrations outside the Spanish embassies in New York and Washington DC swiftly followed Trump's unpopular move, and famous buildings worldwide lit up in green in silent protest.
