Head of the General Workers' Union (UGT) for Madrid, Miguel Ledesma, said a 'sizeable majority' voted in favour of the new conditions, which include a €2-a-day basic pay increase, 69 temporary job contracts being made permanent, and promotions for workshop staff and dustbin lorry drivers.
Even though the strike was only ongoing for 48 hours, the vast quantities of rubbish accumulating on the streets and in and around bins means it may take 'a little longer than usual' to 'restore normality' to Madrid, Ledesma admitted, but workers would 'make every effort' to clean up the city as quickly as possible.
Madrid city council had also attempted to intervene in the labour dispute, and says it is now 'relieved' and 'grateful' for the 'efforts made on all sides to negotiate' a satisfactory solution enabling the strike to be called off quickly.
