AN 11-YEAR-OLD girl admitted to hospital with 'stomach pains' has given birth at Murcia's La Arrixaca Hospital, having not realised she was pregnant.
Medics say they tested the child upon arrival and found out that her pains were in fact caused by her going into labour.
Despite the extreme risk involved in a girl so young being pregnant and giving birth, the process went well and she did not need a Caesarian section or any other surgery.
Although not confirmed, it is thought that the mum and her baby are in good health.
She had been brought to A&E by her parents, who are Bolivian and who did not know she was expecting a baby either, hospital staff confirmed.
In accordance with procedure, given that the child is a minor and very young, health workers contacted the police and social services, who are investigating the case.
This situation is extremely rare in Spain, where teenage pregnancy is very uncommon and the average age of a first-time mother is around 33.
But where a young child is pregnant, authorities will look into the matter as a routine issue in case sexual abuse is involved.
