The Brazilian couple were only due to spend a few hours in Málaga, and by 16.00, the husband was becoming desperate as he could not find his wife and had only an hour to go before the ship left.
In a panic, he asked some taxi drivers in a rank for help, saying the woman had disappeared when they were visiting the monuments in the city centre and he had turned his back for a few seconds.
He described her appearance, and the cabbies spread out and went off in their cars looking for her.
One of them wired through to the others to say he had found a woman in the Alameda area who answered to the description.
He approached her, calling her by her name – Elizabeth – and she answered.
The driver put Elizabeth in the cab and rushed back to the rank, where the other cabbies and her husband were waiting.
Thanks to their sterling efforts and presence of mind, the couple was able to get back on the ship before it left.
They are shown on the above picture, reunited after the frantic search.
