One weekend, 271 migrants rescued in two provinces
02/07/2018
A TOTAL of 271 migrants have been rescued off the coast of southern Spain in just one weekend, the coastguard reports.
Figures released today reveal that nine overloaded and barely-seaworthy boats were intercepted yesterday (Sunday) and Saturday in or around the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alborán Sea.
Five of the rafts reached the coast of the province of Cádiz yesterday, carrying 160 migrants, mostly sub-Saharan Africans.
Rescuers transferred 57 of them to the port of Tarifa and the remaining 103 to that of Algeciras.
Just a day earlier, another 20 sub-Saharan men were taken to Tarifa and 38 other people disembarked in Algeciras, all 58 of them travelling on just three boats.
Further east, a small sailing boat loaded up with 53 migrants was towed to safety in the port of Almería after crossing the Alborán Sea, which lies between this part of Spain and the Morocco-Algeria border.
Rescue workers in Cádiz say 'every day is like the Aquarius' to them, referring to the charity ship carrying 629 migrants the government agreed to welcome in Valencia after both Italy and Malta refused to let them dock.
