Light at the end of the tunnel: Iker Casillas' wife finishes chemo
07/11/2019
SPECULATION that ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas may be back playing for FC Oporto has turned out to be unfounded – but his wife has reportedly finished chemotherapy six months after being operated on for early-stage ovarian cancer.
Sara Carbonero, 35, recently sparked intrigue when she posted a picture of a huge bunch of flowers on Instagram and her closest friend responded that she had 'plenty to celebrate'.
And it now turns out the TV reporter and influencer has finished the most gruelling episode of her treatment which, earlier in summer, doctors at Madrid's Clínica Rubén assured would be the first step towards a 'complete cure'.
Fortunately for Sara, her ovarian cancer was found by chance during a routine gynaecology appointment, meaning it was at a very early stage – normally, this strain of the disease is not detected until it is too late, as it is asymptomatic until it is stage III or IV.
In fact, the cancer returns in 80% of women after surgery and chemotherapy, given that theirs is not discovered in time, although in Sara's case, it was caught at the beginning and surgery was a success, meaning medical professionals are talking of a 'complete recovery'.
Doctors confirmed after her operation that all the cancer had been removed, meaning chemotherapy is mainly preventive, to ensure no microscopic malignant cells remained in her body which could reproduce later on.
Normally, in her situation, she would also need radiotherapy and hormone drugs, meaning she is probably not out of the woods yet, but neither of these will cause the gruelling side effects she would have suffered as a result of chemotherapy.
Iker, too, has sparked rumours of a possible comeback after he published a photograph of his football boots on Instagram with the message, “After six months and three days, they are about to be used again!”
Sara had also made a comment about how her husband, 38, was 'heading closer to the goal'.
But it would seem unlikely Iker is back in play so soon after his heart attack in May, for which he needed an emergency intervention to fit three stents, given that he has been resting all summer and the level of fitness required for a player of FC Oporto calibre would take months to reach, even without taking his health condition into consideration.
He has a follow-up consultation and tests due in December, which he is expecting to give him a clearer idea as to when – if ever – he will be able to return to the game.
It turns out he was back in his goalkeeper strip for the new season line-up for Oporto, since he has been included in the list of players, although he has admitted that he is not willing to take any risks with his health.
After the toughest summer of their lives – which they said their sons Martín, five and Lucás, three have helped them through – the celebrity couple is looking forward to 2020, a year which Sara said in ¡Hola! magazine on Wednesday would be 'full of weddings and hen parties, a pending trip away and a concert'.
