KING Felipe VI's annual Christmas Eve speech once again included a covert appeal to secessionist politicians, as well as raising concerns about young adults' struggle to afford housing and violence against women.
Infanta Elena stuns public with Coldplay cover
07/05/2020
KING Felipe's elder sister, the Infanta Elena has gone viral for a second time with a cover version of a popular hit-turned-Coronavirus anthem – this time, performing Fix You by Coldplay.
The first-born child of Rex Emeritus King Juan Carlos I and his wife, Queen Sofía, Her Royal Highness Elena de Borbón, 56, stunned the public a month ago when she unexpectedly took part in a cover of Dúo Dinámico's Resistiré, which has been playing from balconies across the country since lockdown started.
She has recently done it again with Coldplay, and Infanta Elena cantando ('Infanta Elena singing') has become a trending topic.
Her show via the web platform Singerhood saw her, at home in Madrid where she lives alone with her dog, pouring heart and soul into her act whilst gripping her headphones.
When asked what led her to joining the covers on Singerhood, HRH Elena simply said, “it was just something that came up.”
Spontaneous, dressed down and with no makeup, the Infanta's Singerhood performances have thrust her back into the spotlight again after many years of a low-profile life following her sister, the Infanta Cristina's excommunication from Royal duties due to her possible involvement in a public fund embezzlement case which landed her husband in jail.
Although Elena de Borbón had no connection whatsoever with what is known as the 'Nóos Case' – after the non-profit institution set up as a front for money-laundering – when her brother became King he opted to stand down both his sisters, not just Cristina, so as not to be seen as pointing the finger.
Cristina and her husband, Iñaki Urdangarín, lost their titles of Duke and Duchess of Palma as a result of the case, but Elena, who divorced the father of her children, Jaime de Marichalar, 11 years ago, retains her own status as Duchess of Lugo.
She has been spending lockdown alone with her dog, since her son Froilán, 21, was staying with a friend in Málaga when the State of Alarm was declared and opted to remain there, meaning he cannot return until travel restrictions are removed.
Elena's daughter Victoria Federica, 19, lives with her boyfriend, Jorge Bárcenas, on a private estate in Jaén, and they have had friends staying with them since before the national quarantine.
