US laboratory Moderna has chosen Spain as one of its principal worldwide distribution points, meaning that over 600 million doses of the vaccine will pass through the country.
Details of which parts of Europe will receive many of the 600 million vaccines scheduled to pass through Spain have not yet been revealed.
In terms of national distribution, Moderna has confirmed that it will be using "one central dedicated vaccine distribution point to service all the autonomous communities" in Spain and that vaccination teams will then collect the vaccines from designated points within each geographical area.
The first COVID-19 vaccine to arrive in Spain will be the Pfizer one, which will come overland from Belgium during the next few days. Where exactly it will be warehoused in Spain is currently being kept a closely guarded secret, and distribution will be coordinated jointly by the Health Ministry and the Interior Ministry.
The vaccine warehouses will be guarded by the police, as will the vaccination teams in charge of transport. "The vaccine transport teams will be provided with a police escort, and police will be guarding the vaccine storage facilities and acting as bodyguards to the vaccination teams as well as providing security at vaccine development centres in Spain", confirmed a police spokesperson.
