First babies of 2022 born in Barcelona and Gandia
01/01/2022
SPAIN'S first babies born in 2022 came into the world at exactly midnight – a boy and a girl, both on the east coast.
Alexa appeared just in time for the last of the chimes at Barcelona's Sant Pau Hospital, weighing a very healthy 3.765 kilos (8lb 5oz).
Her mum, Valentina, is said to be doing well, and the girls have already shared a photograph of themselves with proud dad Alexander smiling over them.
This year's first baby boy and also the first birth of 2022 in the Comunidad Valenciana is Hugo Moldovan, who arrived as the clock struck midnight for January 1 at the Francesc de Borja district hospital in the Valencia-province coastal town of Gandia.
Smaller than Alexa but nonetheless a healthy size, Hugo's birth weight was 3.22 kilos (7lb 1.6oz).
Another seven minutes would pass before baby number three of 2022 put in an appearance – Ziam Daniel, at the hospital in Torrejón de Ardoz (Greater Madrid region) weighing a very well-rounded 3.98 kilos (8lb 12oz) – and at a quarter past midnight, Unax was delivered at Basurto Hospital in Bilbao (Basque Country), weighing 3.34 kilos (7lb 6oz).
The central region of Castilla-La Mancha announced its first newborn of 2022 at 00.30, a little boy of 3.2 kilos (7lb 1oz) at Toledo University Hospital, although he has not yet been given a name.
Alexa was not the only little girl to be born within the first hour of the New Year – Rocío, also weighing 3.2 kilos, was successfully delivered at the hospital in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz province), the newest arrival of 2022 in the southern region of Andalucía.
In fact, before the first hour of the year was over, a baby boy had been born at Santander's Valdecilla Hospital (Cantabria), and who has yet to be named, then five minutes later at 00.45, a little girl, Ekia, arrived at Navarra University Hospital, the first for her region, weighing 3.1 kilos (6lb 13oz).
The Balearic Islands' first birth of the New Year was at exactly the same moment as Ekia was delivered – Spain's first twins of 2022 came into the world at the Mateu Orfila Hospital in Mahón, Menorca.
Alba is the eldest by 24 minutes, as her brother Blai came along at 01.09.
Although multiple births can often mean low-weight babies, Alba (3.39 kilos, or 7lb 7.6oz) and Blai (3.59 kilos, or 7lb 14.6oz) were a very healthy size.
Technically, the baby girl born in Tenerife at 00.48 on January 1 was the 10th birth in Spain of the year, although as the Canary Islands are an hour behind the rest of the country, it was 01.48 elsewhere in her home nation when she arrived at the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria Hospital, which makes her newborn number 12 – the as-yet unnamed new daughter is also the heaviest of all 2022's earliest babies, at an eye-watering 4.2 kilos (9lb 4oz).
Earlier than the Canaries' first baby of the year but later in 'clock time' were the first births in Aragón – Bruno, at Zaragoza's Miguel Servet Hospital at 01.16 – and Extremadura, where another girl called Alba started out life in Badajoz University Hospital, weighing a very slight 2.61 kilos (5lb 12oz).
Mario weighed 3.63 kilos, or exactly 8lb, when he was welcomed into the world at Gijón's Cabueñes University Hospital at 02.00, the first baby of the year for Asturias.
And Olivia decided to wait until it was well and truly daylight before putting in an appearance – the first baby of 2022 for the centre-northern region of Castilla y León, Elena María Parrilla gave birth at 09.03 on January 1 at Valladolid's Río Hortega Hospital to Francisco Javier de Casas' daughter.
Olivia was a tiny 1.585 kilos (3lb 8oz) at birth, but she and Elena are reported to be doing very well.
Curiously, if the babies born in Barcelona, Gandia, Torrejón de Ardoz, Bilbao, Toledo, Jerez, Santander, and Pamplona (in Navarra) travelled to the Canary Islands, Portugal, the UK, Ireland or Morocco for the festive season, they would be celebrating their birthdays on December 31, given that it was still 2021 in these areas at the time they were born.
And if Alba and Blai were in the Canaries together over the Christmas period, the twins would be celebrating their birthdays on different dates and in different years – given the time lag, had they been born on Spain's other set of islands, Alba's date of birth would have been December 31, 2021 and Blai's would have been January 1, 2022.
