'Mini-hero' Mohammed gets medal from Madrid government
11/02/2020
A YOUNG hero who saved his mother by keeping calm and calling 112 is due to receive a medal today in Madrid regional government headquarters.
February 11 is European 112 Day, and town and city councils and regional governments normally commemorate it by granting distinctions to companies, individuals, professionals and public organisations who have contributed to improving the emergency service, whose three-digit number is the same across most of the continent.
Mohammed, 11, from the commuter town of Leganés, will be one of these, in recognition of how he called the emergency hotline just before 07.00 on Boxing Day after his mum, Nabila, collapsed in the kitchen.
“Hello, sorry, I've just heard my mum suddenly scream and she's fallen on the floor and I don't know what's the matter with her,” the youngster told the operators.
He and his six-year-old brother were at home with their mother, 32, when she fainted, banging her head as she fell, which caused her to scream in pain.
Mohammed kept calm and answered the operators' questions, then gave his address.
They assured him he was 'doing very well', and not to worry.
It turned out Nabila's fainting had not been caused by any serious health condition, and the bang on the head had not left her with any damage.
She was discharged the same day after being examined in hospital.
Regional government president Isabel Díaz Ayuso says Mohammed will be given a medal for being 'an example of proactive initiative, maturity and responsibility'.
Deputy president Ignacio Aguado visited Mohammed and his family at home in Leganés last week, and praised the little boy for his 'maturity', which he said was 'clear' from the recorded phone conversation with the 112 staff, who remarked on his 'admirable aplomb and level-headedness'.
Aguado also praised the regional emergency services themselves for their 'rapid reaction in all situations'.
